#59: Feeling Overwhelmed? The 4 Phases on Your Journey to Alignment

If you're feeling overwhelmed… with life, work, decisions, or just everything, you're likely in one of 4 phases on the path to alignment. This framework helps you identify exactly where you are, understand what's happening, and know what kind of support you need next. It's a journey, not a problem to fix.

Hello and welcome to Find Yourself, Change Your Life. I'm your host, Mary Clavieres. This podcast is here to help you rediscover yourself and become the leader of your life, however you want that to look.

For today's episode, I want to walk you through the 4 phases that I see people go through on their journey from feeling overwhelmed to living in alignment. And I'm sharing this framework because I think it can be really, really helpful for you to understand where you are right now in your own journey.

Because when you know where you are, you can then understand what you need and what kind of support would be most helpful for you in this phase. And that makes such a difference instead of just feeling like you're floundering or you're stuck or you don't know what to do next.

4 phases of alignment from feeling overwhelmed

Why This Framework Matters

So often when we're feeling overwhelmed, we think something's wrong with us. We think we should have it all figured out by now. We compare ourselves to other people who seem to have their lives together. And we just feel... stuck.

But here's what I've learned working with clients and going through my own journey: there are distinct phases that people move through. And understanding which phase you're in helps you realize:

1. You're not broken… you're just in a phase

2. There are specific next steps for where you are

3. You're actually making progress, even when it doesn't feel like it

So let me walk you through the 4 phases.

Phase 1: Running on Someone Else's Manual

This is where most people start. You're doing what you're "supposed" to do. You followed the path you were given… went to school, got the job, checked the boxes. On paper, everything looks good.

But somewhere along the way, you started feeling like something's off. Maybe you're experiencing decision fatigue where you can't even decide simple things anymore. Or burnout and exhaustion that doesn't go away no matter how much rest you get. There's this nagging feeling that this isn't what you really want, but you can't quite name what's wrong. You find yourself comparing to others and wondering why you're not happy when you "should" be. And through all of it, you're ignoring your body's signals because you're too busy pushing through.

You're living according to someone else's definition of success. Maybe it's your parents' expectations, your culture's values, your industry's standards. You've been operating from this patchwork manual you've stitched together over the years, and it's not actually yours.

The realization in this phase: Something needs to change, but you don't know what yet.

Phase 2: Understanding & Seeing the Patterns

This is when you start waking up to what's actually happening. You begin to see the patterns you've been repeating, where you've been overriding your body and intuition, what's actually yours versus what you took on from others. This is often where people discover tools like Human Design and start understanding their unique wiring.

You're learning about the mind-body connection, your decision-making style, energy management, and what alignment even means for YOU specifically. Not what it means in general or what it should mean, but what it actually means for your unique design.

This phase can feel exciting but also overwhelming. You're discovering so much about yourself. You're finally getting language for things you've always felt but couldn't articulate. But you're also realizing how much you've been living out of alignment, and that can bring up grief.

You might feel excited about the possibilities while simultaneously overwhelmed by how much there is to learn. Frustrated that you can't implement everything at once. And grief for the time you spent living someone else's way. All of these feelings can coexist, and that's completely normal.

The work in this phase: Learning, exploring, and beginning to experiment with new ways of being.

Phase 3: Integration & Practice

This is where the rubber meets the road. You've learned about your wiring, you understand the concepts, and now you're actually practicing living differently. You're making decisions from your body wisdom instead of just your mind. You're setting boundaries based on your energy. You're practicing new habits and ways of being, working through the conditioning and old patterns, and building consistency with alignment practices.

This phase is messy. You'll mess up. You'll fall back into old patterns. You'll make aligned decisions one day and then completely override yourself the next. You'll feel like you're taking two steps forward and one step back.

And that's completely normal.

This phase requires patience with yourself, support and accountability, permission to experiment and learn, and willingness to be uncomfortable as you grow. It's not about perfection. It's about practice.

The shift happens slowly, then all at once. One day you realize you're making aligned decisions without having to think about it as much. Your body's wisdom is becoming your default, not just something you have to remember to tap into.

Phase 4: Embodied Aligned Living

This is where it all comes together. You're living in alignment more often than not. It's not perfect—it never is—but you have trust in your body's wisdom, clarity on what's yours and what's not, boundaries that support your energy, and the ability to make decisions that feel aligned even when they're hard. Your life reflects who you actually are, not who you thought you should be.

You're still learning and growing—that never stops. But you've integrated the practices into your life in a way that feels natural now, not forced. You're not thinking about alignment all the time because you're living it.

You might be inspiring others through your transformation, sharing what you've learned, deepening your consciousness work, or supporting others on their journey. Or maybe you're just living your life in a way that feels true to you, and that's more than enough.

Your life looks different. Your relationships look different. Your work looks different. Because YOU are different. You've come back to yourself.

Where Are You Right Now?

As you read through these phases, you probably felt a resonance with one of them. Maybe you're clearly in Phase 1, feeling that something needs to change. Maybe you're in Phase 2, learning and discovering. Maybe you're in the messy middle of Phase 3, practicing and integrating. Or maybe you're in Phase 4, embodying this work.

Here's what I want you to know:

You're not behind. You're not stuck. You're exactly where you need to be.

Each phase has its purpose. Each phase teaches you something. And you can't skip ahead—you have to go through them.

The awareness of where you are is actually the first step to moving through it. Because when you know what phase you're in, you know what you need. You know what kind of support to look for. You know what practices will actually help versus what will just add to the overwhelm.

What You Need in Each Phase

If you're in Phase 1, it’s about awareness. Start paying attention to your body, noticing the patterns, and getting curious about what's actually yours versus what you've taken on. Start with simple practices like checking in with your body throughout the day.

If you're in Phase 2, it’s about education and exploration. Learn about your Human Design. Explore the mind-body connection. Try different tools and see what resonates. Give yourself permission to be a beginner and learn.

If you're in Phase 3, it’s about practice and support. This is where working with someone who can hold space for you, reflect back what they're seeing, and support you through the integration can be incredibly valuable. Support provides accountability and permission to mess up.

If you're in Phase 4, it’s about continued growth and deepening. You might be called to share what you've learned, support others, or deepen your own consciousness work. You need space to keep evolving.

Moving Forward

The journey from feeling overwhelmed to living in alignment isn't linear. You might move through phases and then circle back. You might be in Phase 3 with one area of your life and Phase 1 with another. That's okay.

The point isn't to rush through the phases or get to Phase 4 as fast as possible. The point is to understand where you are so you can give yourself what you actually need.

Because when you're in Phase 1, trying to do Phase 3 work won't help… you'll just feel more overwhelmed. When you're in Phase 2, trying to skip to Phase 4 won't work because you haven't done the integration yet.

Meet yourself where you are. Start there. Trust the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know which phase I'm in?

A: You'll likely feel a strong resonance with one of the phases as you read through them. The phase that makes you think 'yes, that's exactly where I am' is probably your current phase. Trust your gut on this.

Q: Can I skip phases or move through them faster?

A: No, you can't skip phases—each one builds on the last. You have to go through them. That said, how long you spend in each phase varies by person. The key is to give yourself what you need in each phase rather than trying to rush through.

Q: What if I'm in different phases for different areas of my life?

A: This is completely normal. You might be in Phase 3 with your decision-making but Phase 1 with your relationships. That's okay. Meet yourself where you are in each area.

Q: What's the difference between feeling overwhelmed in Phase 1 vs. Phase 2?

A: In Phase 1, you feel overwhelmed but you don't know why or what to do about it. In Phase 2, you're overwhelmed because you're discovering so much and learning about yourself—it's information overload, but you have more clarity on what's happening.

Q: How long does it take to get to Phase 4?

A: There's no set timeline. It depends on where you're starting, how much support you have, and how much time you can dedicate to the work. Some people move through in months, others take years. The journey isn't about speed—it's about actually integrating the work.
