Everything is Energy – The Importance of Energy Management
Today's episode about energy management. I want to talk about the importance of energy management, and then give you a simple tool that you can use to measure and evaluate your energy. What most people don't realize is that everything is energy. A lot of the times, people can brush it off as something that's fluff or not really so important because it's not as tangible. What I have come to find is that it's actually very powerful, and it's a really important part of how you manage yourself, how you manage your life, how you show up for yourself and others.
Paying attention to your energy is critical so that you can avoid burnout and live with more joy, happiness, peace, and success. It really comes down to how you manage your energy. And, again, it's not necessarily as tangible. I have an engineering background. This was not on my radar for a long time. Although, you could really look at energy as part of science, to be honest.
I wanted to bring this to you today as something that you can start to pay attention to, start to notice what you feelings are about energy.
Do you pay attention to your energy?
How do you see when you get frazzled about something or overwhelmed?
When are the moments where you feel calm and centered?
All of this is your energy interacting with other people, other circumstances, the outside world in some way, even things like going to the airport, getting on a plane. You're interacting with so many other people's energies, and they can really do different things to your system if you're not in tune with yourself and with your own energy.
I want to first ground you in that, that energy management is extremely important. And if you're choosing to listen to this and you want to be open to something a little different, you can start to kind of play with this and discover, hey, what are my thoughts about energy? And how does my energy work? You might start to pay attention to certain relationships you have and how you're impacted by certain people. Maybe you have the same types of energetic patterns that come up when you meet with certain people who say, Oh, every time I meet with so and so, I feel really exhausted after. Or every time I meet with this person, I feel, like, really energized. That's all part of your connection with that other person.
It's really important to start to pay attention to that and really see and notice what are the things that are giving me energy and what are the things that are draining my energy. When you start to understand the importance of energy management, you will look at things completely differently.
Energy Dollars Tool – The Importance of Energy Management
As you start to explore the importance of energy management, I have a very simple tool that you can use to try to start paying attention to how your energy works. One of my mentors and dear friends, Pat, gave me this analogy, and it has served me so much over the years. I used to even use it back in my corporate days because I really had to start paying attention to how things were working for me and where I was where I was feeling fulfilled, and where I was feeling stretched and burnt out.
The premise is called energy dollars. You are allotted a certain amount of energy dollars for the day.
Let's say you have a hundred dollars for the day. You spend those throughout the day. You get up, you exercise, you get ready for work, you go to work and handle a few different problems or challenges. You come home, you deal with the kids. All of these different things and interactions that you have throughout the day are using your energy dollars. When you use up your $100, you don't have any more for the day in your spent.
The premise or the idea is as you pay attention to your energy dollars and how much you have throughout the day, you also check-in and see what are the activities that you're doing that are refilling your energy dollars, that are giving you some energy dollars back.
If you go through the day and end up every evening in the negative, overspending your energy dollars, over time, that's going to lead you to burnout. It's going to lead you to exhaustion, and the days are going to become longer and harder. But when you start to incorporate things that give you back energy and refill your energy dollars, then you can you can make it through the day in a different way.
This is all about paying attention to what are the things that are using your energy, and then where can you put some of that energy back? Where can you bring it back? So what are those activities that you're doing for yourself? We've talked a lot on this podcast about different things that you can do for yourself, whether it's journaling or exercise or meditation or body tapping. All these different tools, mind body tools that you can use to kind of refill. Maybe it's you need to have a rest at some point during the day, or you need to pause at lunchtime and take a few breaths and do one to five minutes of stillness or a quiet meditation, or take a walk around the block. It can look different to everybody. Again, I am a big proponent of you have all the different tools in your toolkit. You pick the ones that work for you.
You can start to explore and notice:
What are the things that are giving me energy?
What are the things that refill my energy dollars so that I don't end up broke at the end of the day. And that means really having a pulse on how you're moving throughout the day.
If you're rushing from one thing to the next, where can you take a pause?
Anytime you take a pause, you become more present with where you are in that moment. You reset your system in some way, those are all giving you your energy back. Anything that's leaving you frazzled and overwhelmed and on a roller coaster of emotions is using up your energy dollars. Take a look at that.
Start to pay attention and see where you're using up your energy and where you're refilling it. Of course, when you go to sleep at night, you refill your energy dollars and you wake up the next day with a new pack. It's more about how can you use that throughout the day. How can you use those dollars throughout the day and still end up in the positive at the end of the day? Not every day is going to be the same, of course. Sometimes you will be using a lot more energy, other days not as much. But it's really important to have a pulse on where you are using your energy, how you're using it, and how it makes you feel.
Awareness of this whole concept is a first step to really using this information in a different way and, honestly, managing your life in a very different way. Once I started to pay attention to this and learn how I was using my energy dollars, it really allowed me to it really made it easier for me to say yes or no to certain things. It was an easy barometer for me to use to say, That's going to spend too much of my energy. That's not for me right now. Or, Yes, that sounds amazing, and I will really enjoy that so I'm going to refill my energy dollars by doing that activity. It was really just an easy, simple way for me to start to kind of calculate. In the beginning, of course, I was overspending my energy dollars for sure and not, refilling as much as I could. But now that balance has definitely shifted over time, and I've made a more conscious effort to pay attention to that and use my energy in a very different way.
When you become aware of the importance of energy management and how it works it changes your life. It's one of those things that knowledge is power. So paying attention to your energy, knowing about it, knowing how you can use it and how you can keep track of it in a really simple way will be a game changer. It really will be.
