#51: Real-Time Decision Making: How to Trust Your Intuition in the Moment [Splenic Authority | Decision Making Series]
Hello and welcome to Find Yourself, Change Your Life. I'm your host, Mary Clavieres. This podcast is here to help you rediscover yourself and become the leader of your life, however you want that to look.
Today we're continuing the Decision Making Series, and we're covering splenic decision-making style.
If you're new here, please go back to Episode 48, the series kickoff, and get all the background information. I cover conditioning, using Human Design as a tool, and how this all relates to your mind-body connection.
If you're following along because you have splenic decision-making style, or you want to learn about it because you know someone who does, welcome. That's what we're covering today.
I'm really excited to be going through this series because it can help you with your decision-making style, first and foremost, but it can also help you support other people in your life in a different way.
I truly believe that when we understand and know our decision-making styles as well as those of the people around us, we can better support each other. That includes improving communication, asking for what we need, and getting support in a way that actually works.
What Is Splenic Decision-Making?
Splenic decision-making style operates in the moment. And its main concern is your health and safety. That's the foundation of it.
When it comes to the decision-making style, it's very much always in the present moment. It's scanning: what is safe for me or not? What's healthy for me or not?
The Spleen Whispers
One of the biggest things about splenic authority is that the spleen really whispers. It tells you things, it communicates with you. You may not know the reason why.
You get like a hit of information or some kind of download. You might not know why you're getting it in that moment, but you're getting it.
And it can be very easy to dismiss this. It can be very easy to think, "Oh, well, actually, no, that doesn't make sense. I'm not going to do that."
Over time, if you keep ignoring it, what happens is you'll get disconnected from it. You'll get disconnected from that voice.
The good news though is that you can get the voice to come back. You can get the voice to come back by practicing your presence and really paying attention and honoring things in the moment.
How Splenic Authority Shows Up for You
It's not always going to make sense. And it shows up differently for different people.
You might hear this as kind of like a voice that sounds like it's outside of you. You might hear it as a voice that sounds like you. There's different ways that it can show up for you.
This inner knowing might be a flash of awareness. The thing to take away is that you need to lean in and trust that.
Once you get familiar with that voice and you know that it's supportive to you, as you practice that, as you build the muscle, you can keep following it and keep trusting it more and more.
Real-Time Decision Making in Action
All of these decision-making styles I'm covering are meant for the big life decisions. But the spleen is one that when you pay attention in detail, you can be using it all the time. It can guide you all the time through all kinds of things.
You might not know why in the moment, but it will usually show itself later.
A Story About Split-Second Instinct
The example I want to share is actually from my dad, from a long time ago. He told me this story while I was growing up.
Once I learned Human Design, I thought, "Geez, that really sounds like splenic decision-making." And sure enough, I pulled up his chart, and that's what he has.
When he was younger, him and his friends were getting ready to go somewhere. There were two cars that were going to be driving the friends.
He walked up to one of the cars to get into the passenger seat. And as he was walking up to the car, he got this feeling to not get in the car.
Now, he could have very easily dismissed that. "Oh, whatever, I'm just going to get in the car. I'm right here. We're just going down the street. Why not?"
But my dad—being someone who has always been incredibly in tune his whole life, which is really inspiring—he paused. And he told his friend, "Actually, I'm going to go in the other car."
He didn't give a reason because he didn't really have a reason that he could explain. It was really just that he had this feeling the moment he was outside of that car. So he said, "Nope, not going to go in that car." And he got in the other car.
Well, sure enough, down the road a little bit, his friend's car, the one that he was supposed to get into, crashed into a pole. And the pole ended up in the passenger seat.
Luckily and thankfully, everyone was okay. But my dad was fine because he didn't go in that car and get in that seat.
He really honored and was paying attention to the information that he was getting.
Don't Dismiss the Whisper
In this day and age, it's really easy to dismiss that inner knowing. It's really easy to shrug our shoulders and say, "Oh, whatever, you know, it's fine."
And we accommodate and we accommodate and we accommodate. But at some point, it might not actually be fine.
That voice you're getting, that instinct, that knowing that's coming to you is there for a reason. And this is how the spleen operates.
How to Start Practicing Splenic Authority
It can feel really tricky at first if you're someone who's maybe not really in tune with this right now. You might be thinking, "Well, what am I supposed to do with that? I don't get those kinds of knowings."
What I would say is: invitation to practice presence. Invitation to start listening. Start listening to yourself. Start bringing awareness to the world around you and your internal world within that.
It might not seem very tangible, but the more that you can slow down and tune in, you will start to get these nudges and these pieces of information that lead you somewhere.
My dad happened to find out rather quickly the reason why he got this feeling not to go in that car. But sometimes you might not find it out that quickly. Or maybe you'll never really find out.
It's really about just following in each moment, following the information you're getting in each moment, learning how it works for you, and then trusting that for yourself.
Building the Muscle
When some of these big decisions come up, or you're faced with something important, you can tune in with yourself and say, "Oh yeah, that feels right," or "Oh no, no, that doesn't feel right."
But you'll know the voice to trust. You'll know the feeling that comes to you. And you'll be able to trust that when one of those big decisions arrives because you've been practicing it for yourself.
You've been practicing with some of these smaller decisions and tuning in as you move about your day-to-day life.
The Mind-Body Connection
You see how all of this connects back to mind-body connection? We're meant to be using our bodies as a supportive tool. We're meant to be doing that. And in so many cases, we're not really doing that.
The invitation here is to tune in for yourself. Start paying attention. Start bringing awareness to yourself, your presence, your day-to-day, how you're operating.
See when you get those nudges. When do you get some of that information? How does it come through for you?
It's going to look different for different people. It might come to you in a voice. It might come to you in an inner knowing. It might come to you in images somehow. It could be anything.
The important thing is to pay attention for you and how it operates for you. Because then that can be your compass and your guiding light as you're navigating different decisions.
Resources to Support You
Go ahead and get your chart if you don't have it. Grab the workbook as well. It'll have more information and ways that you can go deeper with this.
If you want to work on and learn more about your individual chart, how it's set up, other things to look out for within your decision-making style, I do have the Decision Making Accelerator sessions.
Those are one-time sessions that are really a great place to start. You'll learn more about your style, and you'll also walk away with an action plan—something to put in place for yourself, your next steps.
You can really take this information and start to use it for yourself, start to embody it. Because it's one thing to know and check the box and say, "Okay, yeah, I learned I have splenic decision-making style." It's another thing to actually practice it in your day-to-day life.
